Oslo Opera House Competition

The proposed built form was arranged to enclose an urban space consisting of a timber deck which circles around an external performance space, with tidal water on one side and a shallow pool on the other. The Opera House public space is the terminating urban space in a series of existing and proposed city squares.

The Opera House itself strategically frames views of the Oslo Fjord with the two auditoriums treated as the protagonists on this great stage. Oslo is very much a modern city surrounded by the natural environment of the tree covered Oslo Basin. The Opera House responds to this by enveloping the natural forms of the auditoria by the backdrop of the modern support building.
