The project concerned the provision of student accommodation, all designed in compliance with section 50 of the Finance Act 1999, Guidelines on Residential Developments for third level students. The first phase, completed March ’04, consists of 37 apartments on three levels with communal and caretakers facilities on the ground floor. The ‘L’ shaped building establishes the courtyard which will be completed by a later phase consisting of two blocks of 19 apartments, also on three levels.
The choice of render on the outer face of the building and brick on the inner responds sensitively to the complicated suburban context. Particular attention has been paid to the articulation of the roof to reduce the impact of the scheme and to provide an open and light filled interior.
