Description

Chapel, Mater Hospital

The Design sought to create a sculptural form which would serve as the centre piece of a complex courtyard space at the centre of a hospital. The external contemporary skin of the building, clad in stainless steel and French Lens Stone, is opening up providing a hint of the rituals within.

From the inside the building’s skin provides a sheltered and reflective space. Natural daylight is controlled, falling from above and drawing the congregation’s attention to the altar, formed but the union of the ceiling above and the floor below.

Description

Private Hospital Chapel

The brief was to retain and conserve the existing hospital chapel located in awkwardly between the existing Public Hospital entrance and the entrance for the proposed Private Hospital building. The solution was to create a shared entrance foyer with a roof which provided a covered drop of area and which encircled the chapel as a halo, highlighting the building whilst integrating it to the complex.
